Did you know that the left side of our brain controls the right side of our body? So those of us “righties” allow the logical, systematic, rational, linear side of our mind to control our most handy creative tool? So for all your lefties, are you biologically more creative your pen is yielded in the hand of the more image favored, symphonic, big-picture side of our brain? Boy this would be a tough one to prove right?
I’m not pretending to have the answer. I’ll leave that for future generations to debate. But I did challenge my entertainment design students to investigate this very same question as they prepare to present their first assignment. Can we embrace both sides of our brain to reach more meaningful messages, more unique concepts? Heck yeah, it just takes practice…and lots of it.
Daniel Pink says it best in his book A Whole New Mind. “We are moving from an economy and society built on the logical, linear, computerlike capabilities of the information age to an economy and society built on the inventive, empathetic, big picture capabilities of what’s rising in its place – the CONCEPTUAL AGE. These people – artists, inventors, designers, storytellers, caregivers, counselors, big picture thinkers – will now reap society’s richest rewards and share its greatest joys.” Pretty powerful words!
If you want to learn a little more about Daniel Pink’s incredible book, today’s creation is a book review of which can be found here. Enjoy! I would love to hear your thoughts especially if you’ve read Pink’s work.
